    CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw's office has filed suit against seven unlicensed collection agencies and their owners to stop them from practicing in West Virginia.

    His office says the suits ask the court to enforce subpoenas that will allow the office to investigate allegations of abusive and unlawful debt collection.

    McGraw's office opened up investigations after receiving complaints that the companies made harassing phone calls, impersonated law enforcement and judicial officers and tried to collect nonexistent debts or debts that have been paid. His office says the companies also made false threats that nonpayment would result in arrest or criminal prosecution.
