I am sure there is some where that has energy assistance. I know you would have to be income eligible. Don't be offended but try the local public assistance office and they can direct you or in your phone book there should be a spot for government assistance.

Not for a single working person. Only alternative she has it to borrow money off family or friends or learn to live without until she can pay the bill, plus a reconnect fee.
There are some situations that I know of. If you need electricity to power medically necessary equipment.. you can get help. Or if you have children or old people living in your home during winter months you can get help.
Call BTU and see if they offer a program. Larger companies like HL&P-Reliant have a "share" program. Try the Red Cross, you have one close by. They used to offer assistance thru a grant.
The Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly program is available for financially eligible people, 60 years of age and older, who are experiencing an energy-related crisis.

Scammers Tell Customers Federal Program Will Pay Utility Bills
(Memphis) Memphis, Light, Gas and Water is receiving customer calls about an identity theft scam, convincing people of a federal assistance program for utility bills.
The scam is happening around the country. Recently, News Channel 3 reported Entergy had about 200 customers whose payments were processed by the scammers.
Now, Memphis customers are being hit.
The scammers work online, by phone and door to door. They ask for the customer’s social security number. They then give the customer a fake bank routing number to make a payment, promising credit on the account. That payment never gets to the utility company.
